Natasha Tariq M.Sc. PSYCHOSOCIAL FACTORS AT WORK AND DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS: A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY OF TEACHERS  Depression is a serious illness that may have a profound impact on the mental as well as physical health, along with the daily routine of a person. Many work-related factors can cause depression. The primary goal of this research is to check whether different workplace psychosocial aspects play a role in the development of depression in teachers. A total of 414 teachers in Lalamusa were surveyed, using convenient sampling, out of which 204 teachers were from government institutes and 210 teachers were from private institutes. A cross-sectional survey is conducted and data is collected within 31 days. There are 151 (36.5%) males and 263 (63.5%) females included in the sample. CES-D scale and COPSOQ III Scale are used to measure depression and psychosocial factors at work, respectively. Total of 40.6% teachers show major depression while 20.8% teachers suffer from mild depression. Quantitative demands, social support, social community, insecurity at work, job satisfaction, mental health were the psychosocial factors at work, considered in this study. Spearman’s Rank correlation resulted that quantitative demands, insecurity at work, and mental health are positively correlated with depression and can be a cause of depression in workers. Social support, social community, and job satisfaction are negatively correlated with depression. Ordinal Logistic Regression results that more quantitative demands, low social support and social community results in increase of depressive symptoms. Job insecurity and mental health showed a significant increase of 2.83 and 4.845 respectively, in depressive symptoms while low job satisfaction can cause 0.622 increase in depressive symptoms. It is concluded that all psychosocial factors at the workplace affect a worker’s mental health and can cause mild to major depression. Depressive symptom worsening is predicted by unfavorable psychosocial work situations. 2021
