Mission

The mission of the Department of Chemistry, UoG is to equip the students in the areas of research based knowledge of Chemistry in order to enable them to compete at the international level, to achieve excellence in research and teaching in the field of Chemistry, and to develop a world class center of excellence in the industrial triangle of Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot.

Introduction

Chemistry is indispensable for all fields of life. It has been playing an important role in the development of human race since long. Its involvement in providing energy, food, shelter, clothing, medicine and other necessities to human beings makes it a versatile field of knowledge. Thus, the study of Chemistry as a subject is important in the progress of human beings on a global level. The main aims of the curricula of the Department of Chemistry are to impart a sound knowledge in a creative and analytical manner. For this purpose, different methods of explanation, investigation, organization of data and its utilization are taught to the students. This helps them in applying Chemistry in social and economical spheres, such as health, agriculture, industry and defense. Further, the courses offered by the Department of Chemistry improve the students' writing, oral communication and computer skills, thereby meeting the needs of the changing national as well as global scenario. It encourages the students to become independent learners, broaden their knowledge, and develop their capabilities. Sixteen (16) qualified faculty members have been serving in the Department of Chemistry. Recently, some faculty members of Department of Chemistry have won HEC research grant of more than thirteen (13) millions rupees.

The study programs in Chemistry train the students for specialization in emerging technological and multidisciplinary fields such as Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. After completing their degrees, the students will be able to apply their knowledge in their respective fields effectively. The Department of Chemistry has its four large laboratories equipped with High-Tech instruments which are used by the research students of Department of Chemistry as well as by the students of other departments. The major lab equipment is: GC-MS, HPLC, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Electrochemical Workstation and UV/Visible Spectrophotometers. The faculty and the students of the Department of Chemistry have published more than 400 scientific research articles in national and international journals. The Department is offering BS in Chemistry, MSc in Chemistry, MPhil in Chemistry and PhD in Chemistry.

Chairperson´s Message

Chemistry, being the oldest experimental science, is called the central science because the scientists belonging to natural sciences study chemicals at some level. A background in chemistry is useful in a career for studies and research in basic disciplines of science. The department provides a congenial and rigorous environment in the forefront areas of chemistry at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels. The department boasts state-of-the-art equipment, highly qualified and dedicated faculty determined to provide the world-class teaching and high quality research.
