Asma Iqbal Kayani Ph.D Representation of Wo(Men): A Feminist Stylistic Analysis of Selected Works of Ali and Faruqi  The representation of women and men in literature has been an interesting area of inquiry inthe field of language and gender. The focus area of the present study is to trace and unpackthe relationship between linguistic structures and gender representation in two literary textsi.e., The Book of Saladin (1998) and The Mirror of Beauty (2013) two novels authored byTariq Ali and Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, respectively. Guided by the feminist literary criticism, the study utilizes the tripartite linguistic levels of analyses from feminist stylistics modelproposed by Mills (1995). The linguistic features investigated at the level of word comprisegeneric nouns, paired terms and marked/unmarked terms. The transitivity choices and the useof metaphors are examined at sentence/phrase level while the framework of characterizationat the level of discourse is selected to see the portrayal of women and men in these works.Grounded in qualitative research design the study follows the qualitative content analysismethodology to collect the data through purposive sampling utilizing close reading methodand note-taking technique. The corpus tool, AntConc (3.2.1) is also utilized to collect data atword level. The findings reveal that both the novelists are biased in their use of languagetowards gender depiction where they portray men more positively as compared to thewomen. At word level, the use of masculine generic nouns, the initial positioning of maleterms in paired terms and the use of marked terms for women in maximum cases show thebiased attitude of both the novelists. At sentence level, Ali (1998) has projected women asimmoral characters even showing them in power through transitivity choices in someromance scenes while Faruqi (2013), too, shows women negatively where men command andcontrol them mostly. Both the writers are noted to be biased again where they representwomen negatively through metpahors as well. The findings at discourse level furtherhighlight the biased attitude of the novelists towards women where they write to reinforce thestereotypical representations of gender. The use of some non-sexist linguistic items, thoughless in number and frequency, is a crucial finding of the study which suggests the idea thatlanguage users need to end sexism by using a bias-free language. On the basis of thesefindings, it is concluded that researchers need to develop a critical look to examine therepresentation of both the genders in different forms of discourse in order to suggest andpractice the ways to end the biased use of language. Hence, the researcher maintains thatlanguage users need to realize their linguistic choices to purge away sexist mentality bygiving a balanced picture of both the genders. 2024
Ayesha Zafar Ph.D Urdu and English Verb Classes: A Study of Semantic and Syntactic Properties  Verbs are considered a main class in parts of speech category due to their specific attributes. They serve as the core element in a sentence. Similarly, they act as the organizational core ina sentence as they name events or states with participants. Verbs are classified into categoriesand subcategories based on their relationship between the syntax and semantics. Thissignificant classification has developed interest in researchers from the fields of linguisticsand computational linguistics. Linguistic analyses have been done based on the classificationof verb classes. Therefore, they are a great help in the development of natural languageprocessing applications. Thus, the development of lexical and verbal resources is helpful forsemantic analyses in this regard. Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language and it has a complex verbalsystem. It lacks common linguistic resources and NLP applications. Despite the fact, it isspoken predominantly in Pakistan and India, there is no comprehensive work on the verbclasses of the Urdu language. Therefore, this research identified the syntactic and semanticproperties of Urdu verbs with the help of machine learning techniques. The researchsuggested a framework of the Urdu NLP system by incorporating POS, NER, and Urdu verbexamination. Additionally, it discussed how a completely new data set was produced for theNER task from a machine learning perspective. Part of Speech (POS) tagging, and NamedEntity Recognition (NER) were two basic and related NLP tasks that were the core of thisframework for Urdu Natural Language Processing (UNLP). For this purpose, this frameworkadopted deep learning and machine learning models. The Urdu POS problem was addressedin the first module of the research. Similarly, the creation of an Urdu NER system based onDeep Recurrent Neural Network (DRNN) learning methods with several model architectureswas described in the second module. Moreover, Urdu Named Entity (UNER) tagged datasetwas also elaborated side by for the better analysis as it was still small in comparison to thelinguistic resources of English and other languages. The results depicted that the usage ofWord Embedding and POS traits together was advantageous for the analysis of Urdu verbNER. As the Urdu language has a rich morphological system, the results may be adapted toother languages which have a rich morphology, such as, Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, and Arabic. These findings contributed to the Urdu language resource with a sufficiently large newlycreated NE marked dataset to make this dataset freely and publicly accessible, as well as toencourage further researchers to utilize it as a test for experiments in Urdu NER research. 2024
Zulekha Fajar MS Interpersonal Meaning in Media Discourse: A Multimodal Analysis of Pakistani and British Fashion Magazines  This qualitative study first aims to explore the meaning of textual and visual modes in magazines from the interpersonal perspective. Secondly, to figure out the similarities and differences at textual and visual levels from Pakistani and British fashion magazine articles using systemic functional multimodal discourse analysis (SF-MDA). SF-MDA helps to understand the meaning systems comprising visual and verbal texts, as well as to comprehend social functions owned by a text. So, this study employs Halliday and Matthiessen’s (2014) interpersonal meaning to analyze the textual elements while Kress & van Leeuwen’s (2006) model of visual grammar is applied for the analysis of visuals. The magazines are selected using a convenience sampling technique. The source of data for this study includes two Pakistani fashion magazines (DIVA and Fashion Central) and two British fashion magazines (Closer and Wallpaper). The articles from magazines selected based on the description of clothing including the textual and visuals have been selected for analysis. The period for the collection of the data is 2 years from January 2022 to January 2024. The findings of the study show that at the textual level the declarative mood is most frequently used in Pakistani and British fashion magazines in all articles. The two articles from Pakistani magazines and two articles from British magazines favor the declarative clauses. The second frequently used mood is the imperative mood present in the short clauses. It functions as a suggestion by evolving the reader to take action. Finally, the least use of interrogative mood in both Pakistani and British fashion magazine articles in the form of questions is not to seek the answer from the reader but used as an assumption for the reader’s preferences. At the visual level the images in Pakistani fashion magazines depict the cultural theme by presenting traditional outfits and having direct eye contact captured from a frontal angle to depict personal distance. In contrast, the images in British fashion magazines adopt a more modern and dynamic visual strategy as the direct gaze of the represented participant on the camera most of the images depict personal interaction as captured from an eye-level angle that treats equality. To conclude, the analysis reveals that Pakistani and British fashion magazines are similar in the level of text as the frequent use of declarative mood in articles text. But differ at the visual level as the images in Pakistani magazines aim to preserve cultural heritage, while British magazine’s images focus on driving fashion trends and reader engagement. This study provides information to scholars in the field of linguistics to understand the multimodal framework studies related to media discourse. 2024
Hafiza Kashaf Arshad MS Exploring the Role of Classroom Environment in English Language Learning Skills at Tertiary Level  This study has been designed to examine classroom environment and English language learningskills among students at tertiary level. It has been observed that classroom environment hasfavorable effect on students’ language learning not only at school and college level. For thisstudy, a quantitative approach has been used to conduct the study. The students of BS (4 Years)program constitute the population of the study. A cross-sectional research has been conductedand well structure questionnaire has been used as a tool of data collection. Nazia Anwar Ph.D Evaluative Language in Sports News: A Study of Appraisal Features in Native and Non-native Discourse  The current study aims to investigate the variations in the use of appraisal markersand their positive and negative polarities in native and non-native sports newsdiscourses. It also aims to identify the ways in which native and non-native sportsnews writers differ in evaluating appraising resources in addition to the investigationof the reasons behind such variation. Corpora used for this study were compiled fromtwo native i.e. USA (The New York Times) and UK (The Guardian) and four non-native i.e. Pakistani (Dawn, The Nation, The News and Daily Times) English dailynewspapers. Sports news of six months i.e. from 01-January-2019 to 30-June-2019were collected from both sides to compile the corpora of 2-million words each fornative and non-native discourse. To explore the variations in the frequencies of use ofall subtypes of three subsystems of appraisal theory by Martin and White (2005),concordance lines for the two corpora for all subtypes of Attitude, Engagement andGraduation, generated by AntConc (corpus analysis software) were calculated andcompared statistically within and across the two discourses. To inspect the evaluativeterms and appraising markers, lexical items used for expressing each subtype of allthree subsystems were identified and analysed to bring forth the variations infrequencies of use along with the positive and negative realization of attitudinalmarkers. Moreover, graphical demonstration exhibited the difference in the use ofappraisal markers within and across the two discourses. To undergo the said purpose, explanatory mixed methods design (Creswell, 2014) was applied in the present study.Top most regularly used evaluative markers were counted and two most frequentlyused appraising items from each discourse for each subtype were analyzed to revealthe variations. The results based on the variation in the frequency of use of allsubtypes suggested that native sports news writers have used higher number ofappraisal markers in two subsystems i.e. attitude and graduation while non-nativesports news writers have used more engagement markers. When comparing the use ofpositive and negative attitudinal markers across two discourses, the native sports newswriters have used more attitudinal instances both positive and negative except theinstances showing positive appreciation in which non-native sports news writersoutnumber the native news writers. A further analysis of variations has indicated thatwithin the same discourse, both native and non-native sports news writers have usedappraising items belonging to the subsystems of attitude extensively, engagement(Page 19 of 254)markers were used less than attitudinal markers and graduation markers were usedleast as compared to other two subsystems. Qualitative analysis has shown that nativesports news writers appraised the emotions, characters, behaviours and performancesof their players more than non-native news writers did. They were more apt inassessing their behaviours and giving their judgements both negative and positive, however non-native news writers have preferred to appreciate their players and sportsevents more positively than native news writers did. The difference between the useof appraising items in two discourses has implicated the variations in evaluativestance and ideological perspectives of native and non-native sports news writerswhich may tipoff the better language skills and evaluating abilities of native sportsnews writers. 2022
Bisma Butt Ph.D NDTs in Non-native English: A Syntactic Analysis  The study focuses on alternating English double object construction denoting the argument structure which alternates between prepositional to-dative construction (DAT) and double object construction (DOC). By combining corpus contrastive interlanguage examination, usage based approaches to manage language acquisition, and the use of Minimalist Program (MP), the study investigates the ditransitive constructions with the extraordinary focus on New Ditransitives (NDTs). The contrastive analysis captured and analyzed seventeen verbs in terms of ditransitive construction involving two written corpora i.e. Pakistani English corpus (PEC) (Newspaper corpora, Published articles corpora and Legal precedence corpora) and British English Corpus (BEC) for the same time period (2018-2019) by using Sketch Engine. It is observed that both native and non-native speakers prefer DOC construction. However, there are eight ditransitive verbs (DOC) which are present in P.E e.g. provide, issue, tell, administer, submit, unwrap, explain and restrict but they are not found in BEC , they are called New ditransitives (NDTs) which is the point of research in this study. For best mental modeling of NDTs, a structural transfer hypothesis is proposed. The study shows that in producing NDTs, transfer of L1-Urdu is operative at syntax level and L2- English learners have access to UG-based syntactic and semantic distinctions. Furthermore, for syntactic representation, the alternating patterns (DAT & DOC) are viewed as Dative Shift rotation. Twofold predication phrase (Bowers, 1993, 2001) is used to analyze the ditransitive patterns especially NDTs. It is concluded that syntactically there is no difference in Pakistani English (DOC) and British English (DOC) but the main difference in producing NDTs is due to different parameters and system of lexicon. English speakers by having English as first language have fixed verb complementation restrictions in lexicon whereas Pakistanis are using English as second language, therefore, they access the second language via L1 and they do not have any restriction in lexicon in terms of generating NDTs and this phenomenon is best explained in terms of L1 transfer of structural properties. This research work has great importance in terms of exploring Pakistani English as distinct variety establishing the relationship between corpus studies with usage based model, second language acquisition and syntactic analysis. Further, this study assists the other researchers to draw a line between verb complementation and NDTs in Pakistani English and British English. 2022
Mashal Sajjad MS Religio-Political Ideologies: An Analysis of Thair Ul Qadri’s Selected English Speeches  This dissertation has worked in the field of CDA and particularly to analyze the language of a political and religious scholar used in both the contexts specifically talking about political and religious issues. The focus of this study was to measure the use of cohesive devices in the selected corpus and to highlight the religio-political ideologies used by the speaker. Cohesiveness is a tie used to connect the sentences and also it helps to deliver a uniform idea by grabbing the attention of the audience. This was the main reason to check what type of strategies has been used by Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri in his speeches that he has such a huge number of audiences to listen and respond. Ideology overall is the main concern along with cohesion so to interpret this idea and an individual concept of the speaker that made him an influential figure in Pakistan this study has been conducted by keeping the interrelation of religion and ideology. This is qualitative descriptive study in which the data has been descriptively analyzed by using software AntConc simply to check the frequency and percentage of the cohesive devices. The research is unique in a way that it has selected a corpus on two different subject matters and to check the role of religion and politics in both also in this work the researcher has used two different models to provide answers to the research questions and to meet the set objectives. The particular objectives were to find out the importance of cohesiveness and a particular ideology in a discourse. So the objectives were met as from the analysis of results it has been stated that cohesiveness is important in any discourse to be considered as connected and accurate. The results showed that the speaker has made the use of all the cohesive devices but the most commonly used were conjunctions and references. Among them additive conjunctions and demonstratives were the most repeated ones. To discuss about ellipsis and substitutions the most used were nominal ellipsis and same is with the substitutions. All these cohesive devices have been used to make the speech connected and impressive. The strategy of presenting others as negative is used to prove the opponents as wrong as this was the particular ideology found in the corpus that from the start till to the end the speaker has tried to present others as culprits and wrong. In the first selected speech and written news article which were following the same themes the social-othering strategy has been used as to prove the rulers as wrong and corrupt. In the second speech which he made to prove Islam as a peaceful religion he again used negative words and terms to prove the out-group (terrorists) members wrong and for this he used their negative acts and presented the positive side of in-group members (Muslims). The researcher has come out with the points the cohesion is a techniques which has been used by the speaker and it made his communication smooth and impressive. After studying the corpus in detail the ideology hidden in the discourse stated that it was tried to achieve the idea of change by defaming and negative representation of others. The basic ideology has been delivered by using specific discursive strategies as use of authority, disclaiming the wrong, use of logical evidences and also it is found that the speaker not at once tried to save the face of others and face keeping was totally avoided by the speaker. 2022
Mehwish Noor Ph.D Developing Templates for Academic Discourse: Structural and Functional Analysis of Lexical Bundles  The study has been conducted at the department of English, Faculty of Arts, University ofGujrat, Punjab, Pakistan during 2017-20, to develop ready-to-use templates for academicwritings. The said work will assist scholars in drafting their research work and ultimatelysaving time. The templates were built on the basis of structural and functional descriptions oflexical bundles (LBs) retrieved from Applied Linguistics Theses Corpus. Moreover, thetemplates contained usage-based distribution which is in conformity with the internationallystandardized structure of thesis. Explanatory mixed method research design was applied forthis purpose. For quantitative analysis, a corpus (ALTC) was specifically compiled to retrieve4-word LBs by applying the lexical bundle approach. A list of 440 four-word LBs wasextracted from ALTC; containing 144 dissertations/theses (following 12 by 12 matrix) with atotal of 9840859-word tokens. Subsequently, the qualitative analysis was conducted in threephases; structural categorisation, functional classification, and template formation. In the firstphase, LBs were analysed as per structural classification promulgated by Biber et al. (1999)and modified by Bal (2010). Furthermore, LBs were distributed in two broad categories:Phrasal Bundles (88.41%) and Clausal Bundles (11.59%). They were further broken downinto sub-categories with reference to structural configurations. In the second phase, LBs wereanalysed by following the functional taxonomy proposed by Biber et al. (2004). Moreover,LBs were classified into three main categories: RBs (291/440 LBs= 66.13%), DOBs (79/440LBs= 17.95 %) and SBs (70/440 LBs= 15.90 %), which were further dissected anddiscussed. In the third phase, 26 sets of ready-to-apply templates were developed; utilizingconcordance lines of the LBs. The templates served a multifaceted role to aid the scholars inbuilding effective expressions in their academic writings. They were designed in the light ofSwales‘ (1990; 2004) move structure. First, they were listed by titles on the basis of distinctusages pertaining to broad moves and steps, so that scholars could easily reach the templatebest suiting to their needs. Secondly, each template has a multitude of model sentences;giving scholars the liberty to serve their unique purposes. Lastly, in each of the set oftemplates, all the formulated model sentences were allocated potent chapter names; providingmultiple options, where they could possibly be used. Thus, the innovative use of 4-word LBswas found efficacious in constructing templates perfectly-tailored for academic writingpurposes, thereby, contributing significantly to the field of corpus-linguistics in particular andapplied linguistics (AL) in general. 2021
Shahla Aslam MS A Stylistic Analysis of Lexico-Grammatical Categories in Shamsie’s Home Fire  The study is a stylistic analysis of the novel “Home Fire” written by “Kamila Shamsie”. The main concern of this work is the analysis of Lexico-Grammatical Categories in the text. In this work, “A Checklist of Linguistics and stylistics categories” introduced by Leech and short in their book “Style in Fiction” has been taken as the framework. The research work was carried out following the objectives which were the identification of the items of lexical and grammatical categories, frequency calculation of these items and analyzation of the influence of these items on the authors style. In the process of analyzation qualitative and quantitative measures are used. The four chapters (1,3,5,9) has been taken for the investigation in this analysis. All items of lexical categories and only functional words of the minor class from grammatical categories are analyzed. The findings of this research have concluded that the author has made rich use of “Lexical Categories” and small quantity of the “Grammatical Categories” (preposition, pronouns, determiners, conjunction) are used, which signifies that the descriptive language is paid more attention in the narration of the novel. The Grammatical items are comprising content words which are used according to the syntactical need of the text. The author has represented the abstract ideas and concrete things in scenes and settings of the novel by using nouns. The adjectives, adverbs and verbs are signifying the portrayal of characters and the manners in which they execute actions and expressing their ideas. The treatment with the linguistics categories in Shamsie’s novel has given her a distinguished style. The lexical density, proficiency in expression of the ideas, picturesque vocabulary and lucid style in communication has made Kamila Shamsie a prestigious novelist. 2020
Quratulain MS Word Englishes and Acculturation: A Stylistic Analysis Of Selected English Novels  This descriptive study focuses on the stylistic analysis of the selected English novels ‘THE MINISTERY OF UTMOST HAPPINESS, THE GOLDEN LEGEND and UNDER THE UDALA TREES’ to find acculturation process in the non native varieties of English with special reference to PakE, IndE and NigE. In this research, the proposition of Schneider’s Dynamic Model of PCE (2007) in the evolution, growth and formation of PakE, IndE and NigE has been examined by taking data from the selected English texts by observing the stylistic innovations. Besides this, Leech and Short’s stylistic taxonomy (Short & Leech, 2007) has been categorized to analyse the linguistic levels in acculturation and nativization. As the acculturation at lexis level happens in non native varieties of English through the word formation process i-e suffixation, compounding, conversion, borrowing, clipping and acronyms and abbreviation. The use of elliptic sentences, subject-less and verb-less sentence structure, single word sentence experimentation, interrogative sentence form, stative vs. dynamic verbs, omission or wrong insertion of articles and apostrophe , code switching , literal translation from L1are the syntactic stylistic devices used by these writers to show that their language is foregrounded in culture from social and linguistic point of view. The analysis of the selected texts indicates that English undergoes the process of chutnification (Rushdie, 1995) to be propagated, disintegrated and indigenized by the writers and cultures across the countries. It is concluded that Non native English is a systematic, nativised variety of English with its unique cultural and stylistic features despite the fact that writers have utilized the pre-existing linguistic and stylistic devices, yet the flavor of acculturation and nativization brought them the great recognition for their innovations in style, technique and method. 2019
