Faiz Miran | Ph.D | Leather tanneries wastewater treatment and simultaneous bioelectricity generation using mixed sulfate reducing bacteria in microbial fuel cells Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is emerging as a potential technology for extracting energy from wastes/wastewaters while achieving their treatment. The major hindrance in MFC commercialization is lower power generation due to the sluggish transfer of electrons from biocatalyst (bacteria) to the anode surface and inefficient microbial consortia for treating real complex wastewaters. To overcome these concerns, different strategies were developed. In one of the study, behavioral and/or biochemical traits of acclimatized culture which stimulate biodegradation of organic chemicals was utilized, where much better MFC performance achieved in comparison to non-acclimatized cultures. A maximum power density of 223 ± 11 and 143 ± 6 mW/m2 was achieved with tannery wastewater (1,000 mg/L COD) as electron donors’ source with acclimatized and non-acclimatized cultures, respectively. A significant reduction in power generation in the absence of nutrients revealed their importance for electroactive bacteria. In terms of treatment efficiency, acclimatized culture MFC resulted in ~1.5-fold higher COD removal than non-acclimatized culture MFC. Further, a reduction of 13% COD removal was observed in an open circuit in comparison to MFC mode suggests wastewater degradation was enhanced with extracellular electron transfer. In the modified CF electrode with SRB, a considerable improvement in the bioelectrochemical operation was further observed; where the power density (309 ± 13 mW/m2) was 1.86 times higher compared to bare CF with SRB (166 ± 11 mW/m2), suggesting better bioelectrochemical performance of a SRB-enriched Fe3O4@CF anode in the MFC. This superior activity can be assigned to the lower charge transfer resistance, higher conductance and increased numbers of catalytic sites of the Fe3O4@CF electrode. SRB enriched Fe3O4@CF anode also assist in enhancing the MFC performance in terms of COD removal (>75%), indicating efficient biodegradability of tannery wastewater and higher electron transfer rate from SRB to conductive anode. These findings demonstrate that a combination of the favorable properties of nanocomposites such as Fe3O4@CF anodes and efficient microbes for treating complex wastes can encourage new directions for renewable energy-related applications. Further, a binder-free cerium oxide (CeO2) anode was also developed by modifying carbon felt (CF) via facile hydrothermal method and mixed SRB was utilized as a biocatalyst. Characterization analysis demonstrated the successful synthesis of CeO2 nanoparticles and rougher electrode surface area after modification which enhances the bacterial attachment and ultimately improved electron transfer. The modified CF with CeO2 and presence of SRB resulted in higher power density (436 mW/m2), which was 3.2 times higher than that of CF anode and non-acclimatized initial inoculum. Efficient COD and sulfate removal in the presence of modified electrode further confirmed the significance of CeO2@CF. Microbial community analysis revealed the presence of electroactive SRB at the genus level (>50%) which signified that SRB were enriched and attached to the electrode surface. These findings demonstrate that a combination of the favorable properties of nanocomposites such as CeO2@CF anodes and efficient microbes for treating complex wastes can encourage new directions for renewable energy-related applications. | 2022 |
