Ehsan Ullah Mughal was born in Wazirabad, Pakistan in 1978 and obtained his master's degree from Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan in organic chemistry. In 2013, he obtained his PhD from Bielefeld University, Germany under the supervision of Prof. Dr Dietmar Kuck. Thereafter, he moved to the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Mainz, Germany for a postdoctoral stay in the group of Prof. Dr Xinliang Feng. In 2015, he started his independent research group at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Gujrat, Gujrat, Pakistan.

  • His current research interests focus on the design and synthesis of bioactive heterocycles, synthetic flavonoids, transition metals-based terpyridine complexes and their fabrication in dye-sensitized solar cells and carbon-rich polycyclic aromatic compounds for applications in organic electronics.

Ayza Jabeen MS SYNTHESIS AND EFFECT OF VARIOUS SUBSTITUENTS ON THE TYROSINASE INHIBITORY ACTIVITY OF FLAVONOLS  3-Hydroxyflavone (3-HFs), also termed as 3-hydroxy-2-phenyl-4H-1-benzopyran-4-ones and flavonols, are plant secondary metabolites abundantly present in vascular plants, having polyphenolic structure. They are characterized by presence of hydroxyl group at third position of flavone backbone. They have immense biological applications such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and anticancer. Tyrosinase inhibitors stops melanogenesis, reducing the production of melanin thus preventing hyperpigmentation, skin cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. Flavonols due to carbonyl group interact with hydrophobic protein portion near copper active site of tyrosinase thus inhibiting its activity. Due to antibiotic resistance crisis the search for novel and promising antibiotics have started. Due to the high cost, time-consuming process, and lengthy procedures involved in isolating flavonol from natural sources, which also fail to meet global demand, efforts have begun to focus on synthesizing flavonols. Aim behind this research is to find tyrosinase inhibitory activity of newly synthesized derivatives of 3-HFs. By Claisen-Schmidt condensation chalcones were synthesized and then cyclized in the presence of H2O2. The structure of newly synthesized compound can be confirmed by FT-IR, UV-Vis or X-ray diffraction, fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy. The potency of synthesized compounds was checked against some standard inhibitor (e.g., kojic acid). IC50 of individual derivatives was determined and compared. 2024

Anam Ismail MS Synthesis and Characterization of Terpyridine-Metal Complexes  The piece of task was performed diligently for the manufacture of a series of Nickel (II) andcopper (II) complexes of 2,2’:6’,2’’-terpyridine organic ligand derivatives that exhibitednotable biological, electrochemical and photo physical characteristics to be potentiallyemployed in various fields of chemistry . In this remarkable work the synthesis of terpyridinederivatives was performed by putting to use various aromatic aldehydes like 4-methylbenzaldehyde, 4-chlorobenzaldehde, 3 and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde, 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and some other through the well-established Kröhnke method followedby the complexation of these tridentate 2,2’:6’,2’’-terpyridine derivatives by mixing themethanolic solution of metallic salts such as heptahydrated NiSO4 and dehydrated CuCl2 andmethanolic solution of terpyridine ligand in 1:1 to obtain the complex precipitates upon theaddition of ammonium hexafluorophosphate. The preliminary identification of the synthesizedcomplexes was by TLC and then detailed characterization involving UV-VIS spectroscopy andFTIR. Moreover, the fluorescence potential and electrochemical properties of these complexeswere explored by emission spectrum and cyclic voltammetry respectively. Satisfactory redoxpotential along with superior emission properties were observed suggesting that they has thecapabilities to be employed in dye sensitized solar cells. The prime goal of the research workwas to synthesize low cost terpyridine-based metal complexes that have magnificent redoxpotential and outstanding electrochemical properties. 2020
Nafeesa Naeem MS SYNTHESIS AND BIOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF 4-IMINOFLAVONE DERIVATIVES  In the present research, sixteen derivatives of 4-iminoflavones (1-16) were designed andsynthesized through a three-step reaction and evaluated for their in vitro mushroomtyrosinase inhibition activity. Chalcone was synthesized through Claisen-Schmidtcondensation then oxidatively cyclized in the presence of catalytic amount of I2/DMSO toproduce a substituted flavone. Furthermore, the 2-phenylchromone (flavone) in thepresence of substituted aniline, conc. H2SO4 and ethanol was refluxed for 3-4 hours to geta corresponding 4-iminoflavone derivatives. The molecular structures of all thesynthesized compounds were substantiated by various spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis,FT-IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR). Moreover, the 4-iminoflavone derivatives (1-16) wereexamined for their antimicrobial activity. Biological evaluation exhibit moderate toexcellent activity against different bacterial and mycological strains and their action isanalogous to those of commercially existing antibiotics i.e., clotrimazole and cefixime. Theresults demonstrated that most of the synthesized compounds were better inhibitors ofmushroom tyrosinase with varying degree of IC50 values. Among the series, the compound13 exhibited excellent inhibitory potential against mushroom tyrosinase, even better thanstandard Kojic acid. Remarkably, the compound 13 (IC50 = 1.38±0.1 g/ml) was foundalmost onefold more active as compared to standard compound (IC50 = 1.79 ± 0.64 g/ml).Inhibitory activities of these derivatives are highly reliant on the position and nature ofdifferent substituents on Ring-B of the 4-iminoflavone scaffolds. This study helps to designand develop novel tyrosinase inhibitors by using 2-arylchromone as a structural core in thetime ahead. 2020
