Mission

This Department aims to inculcate the concrete concepts of the subject through high quality class teaching and small scale research work. Furthermore this department infuses the skills and competencies to understand the substantive areas of sociological research.

Introduction

Sociology concentrates on analyzing and understanding the ways in which society functions through various sociological paradigms. Sociology emphasizes the study of human behavior and basic social processes. Without understanding the sociological underpinnings and research areas, the social structure of the society cannot be analyzed in a scientific way.

The department of sociology has designed the lay out of the courses in such a way as to make students aware of the social phenomena and trends. Additionally, the department also instills dynamic research skills in the students. The graduates of the Department of Sociology can find job opportunities in academic institutions, public administration offices, social services and criminal justice system. Furthermore, they can work in social work, population welfare department and vibrant NGO sector. The students of Sociology can also find their professional future in schools, nutrition and health education, public and private agencies and research desks of a number of departments.

The discipline of sociology with its diverse subject matter, equips students with a sold foundation of selection of five optional subjects (Anthropology, Criminology, Gender Studies, Sociology and Town Planning &Urban Management) in Central Superior Services (CSS) Examination. Sociology is basically defined as a study of individuals in relation to their society. It helps in understanding social and international problems. It can give better perspective into crime, corruption, extremism and terrorism, demographic trends, poverty and urbanization. The discipline of Sociology also provides a platform to the students to study the institutional roles and understanding and planning of society. Sociology has made great contribution to enrich human culture. The contents of courses offered in the Department of Sociology give training to the students to have a rational approach to the questions concerning oneself, one's religion, customs, morals and institutions.

Sociology also impresses upon us the necessity of overcoming narrow personal prejudices, ambitions and class hatred.

Sociology is a social science which studies the society in a scientific and structured manner. This subject helps us to provide an understanding of the issues and patterns of behavior in the society. It enables the students to understand the social rules that govern their lives. Sociologists study how these rules are created, maintained, changed, passed through generations, and shared among the people living in various parts of the world. The students of Sociology learn to understand interaction in different social contexts and recognize others' perspectives.

Sociology gives knowledge about how and why society changes. The theoretical perspectives taught in sociology frame the lines of research to study the social life scientifically. It also equips the students to draw/suggest the scientific solutions of the prevailing social problems surrounding them. The labor market needs of the 21st century are changing very fast. The skills of creativity, innovation, critical thinking and analytical problem solving, communication and collaboration, understanding of the multicultural and global context are the need of contemporary era. The graduates of Sociology are better equipped with the tools that are needed to make sense of the changing social world, and they can contribute solutions to the multifaceted social problems as well. They have broad employment opportunities. The employment prospects after holding degree in sociology include social services, community work, law, health services, business, publishing, teaching etc.

The department of Sociology at University of Gujrat is functioning to fulfill the human resource deficit by producing the graduates having knowledge of complex social life and its related problems.
