Nawaz Sharif Medical College
The
University of Gujrat, the Rachna College of Engineering and
Technology, Gujranwala, and the
Gujranwala Campus of University of the Punjab
are fulfilling the needs of local population in terms of Social
Sciences, Basic Sciences, Computer Sciences, Commerce and Engineering
education. However, medical education, though in high demand, is not
available in these institutions. Realising the inadequate facilities of
medical education and quality health services, the Government of the
Punjab took a historic step to revolutionise the health care facilities
in Gujrat by establishing the Nawaz Sharif Medical College (NSMC) at the
University
of Gujrat in
September 2008.
The following
objectives have been set for the NSMC:
-
It will
establish a system of medical counselling in wards as well as out
patients departments where doctors assisted by clinical
psychologists and social workers will address the relatives of the
patients about nature of the disease and its prognosis.
-
There will
be regular interaction with the public at least twice a week on
hygienic living conditions.
-
The doctors
and paramedical staff will be trained by and under the direct
supervision of highly qualified faculty members through utilising
state-of the-art medical equipments and most recently adopted
teaching methodologies.
-
To develop a
system of interaction with colleges, schools and mosques to bring
public awareness about prevention of diseases.
-
To establish
research-oriented atmosphere among the doctors not only in modern
medical field but also in indigenous medicine.
-
A mandatory
system of medical, surgical and administrative audit will be
established for ensuring accountability and responsibility on the
part of employees, especially medical teachers.
-
By induction
of highly qualified medical professionals and modern diagnostic and
therapeutic equipments, not only the public of District Gujrat, but
also adjoining areas of Gujranwala, Sialkot, Wazirabad, Jhelum,
Kharian and Mandi Bahauddin will be facilitated.
-
The
introduction of CT scan, MRI facilities, Cardiac Angiography,
Cardiac Surgery, etc will provide state-of the-art health care
facilities to the public of the area.
-
The College
will develop a Health
Management Information System and computer networking
in the institution. In future, the College will become an
institution for post-graduate studies.
-
In near
future,
College of
Dentistry,
College of
Nursing,
School of
Physiotherapy
and Nuclear Medicine Centre will be set up in Gujrat.
-
The trend to
attend the teaching hospital attached to the College will increase
after the provision of new medical facilities. Therefore, there is
also a need to expand the existing infrastructure of the hospital
and equip it with modern medical equipments to facilitate the
learners as well as patients of the local area.
-
Finally, the
University of
Gujrat plans to
establish a Research and Development Centre to address
the emerging issues through various socio-medical studies by
engaging the medical and social sciences faculty/students both from
the NSMC and UOG.
