Lecture on Importance of Family Studies by Dr Gulzar Ahmad, Professor & Director, Centre for Population, Urban & Environment Studies (CPUES) at UOG
"FAMILY as the core institution of society should be studied extensively from different developmental perspectives”, said DrGulzar Ahmad in his special lecture on “Importance of Family Studies” that was organized by the Department of Psychology, Sociology, and Centre for Population, Urban & Environment Studies, in the Video Conference Hall, University of Gujrat, Gujrat, Pakistan on 14th of June 2012. Prof. Dr. Gulzar Ahmad, The Professor of Psychology and Director, CPUES gave a lecture / presentation on the subject that was followed by discussion by the learned audience.

Dr Gulzar explained the importance of the institution of family in all societies including Pakistan and all religions especially, in Islam. He indicated that the family plays the most important role in the formation and development of core personality traits because of the greatest interaction with parents, siblings, relatives etc. during early crucial years of life. He also elaborated the family’s importance with functions it plays as an institution with reference to biological, social, psychological, and financial needs of all individuals.

Dr Gulzar indicated that we have a lot of scientific literature available on Western societies but are short of it on Eastern and Pakistan societies. DrGulzar, who has expertise in Marriage and Family studies, explained the modern methodology, research designs, and commonly used Scales on the subject. He also indicated more than fifty areas of study in the field. The audience took keen interest in musical video clips on human developmental stages in a family and society as well.

The students, scholars and prospective researchers showed keen interest and were inspired and motived to do research work in the field of marriage and the family in near future. Many students took active part in the discussion and desired to have some more discussions on the subject. Prof. DrFareshUllah, the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Prof. JavedSajjad gave their invaluable input on the subject.

Dr Bushra Akram, Head, Department of Psychology, Ms. Sidra, the coordinator, Department of Sociology, Ms. Naureena, the coordinator, Department of Psychology, Ms. Sameera, Ms. Aliyha, Ms. Iram, Ms. Humaira, Ms. Saima, Ms. Saadia, Ms. Faiqa, Ms. Misbah, Ms. Naila, Ms. Tahira, Ms. Farhat, and Mr. Yousaf Jamal, the staff members from Psychology Department actively participated. All staff members of Sociology and Population Sciences Departments also took keen interest in the field of marriage and Family studies.
