Institute of Chemical and Biological Sciences

Prof Dr Muhammad Faheem Malik
Director
Institute of Chemical and Biological Sciences,
University of Gujrat
Institute of Chemical and Biological Sciences is a part of the Faculty of Sciences and established to focus teaching and research in various fields of Biological Sciences. The strength of this institute is its highly qualified and competent faculty and experience researchers having national and international universities/institutions background. Their excellence is proved with more than 200 research publications in international reputed journals. This institute is especially developed to foster an inter-disciplinary approach across a wide range of biological, biotechnology, chemical and environmental research areas. The Institute has won a number of research projects from national and international funding agencies like Higher Education Commission Pakistan, Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) and The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) (TWAS-COMSTECH) with special emphasis on latest technologies and Biological, Chemical and Environmental issues of Pakistan.
Following departments are the binding force the Institute:
- Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
- Department of Botany
- Department of Chemistry
- Department of Environmental Sciences
- Department of Zoology
The departments offer a variety of Under Graduate, Graduate and Post Graduate degree programs. We have established system, which grooms the students and young fallows to communicate and present their skills and to produce / polish their abilities to work individually as well as in a team for leadership qualities, self confidence, analytical abilities, critical and interpersonal skills, abilities to decide the priority work and capabilities to sustain work pressure.

Institute of Physics and Mathematical Sciences consists of departments of Physics, Mathematics and Statistics of the university. The institute was constituted owing to strengthen coordination and collaboration between these subjects in order to provide an access of available facilities and manpower to the students and faculty for teaching and research. It is well known that the said disciplines are highly linked with each other to study nature and provide facilitation to the mankind. Physicists use mathematics as a tool to build their models to explain the physical phenomenon and problems related to plasma physics, particle physics, nuclear physics, solid state physics etc. It is believed that mathematics, when powered by physics in addition to human ideas and imagination, can discover the structure of the universe. The scientists working in both these fields often encountered problems while analyzing their data and seek assistance of colleagues’ expert in statistical analysis. The institute is therefore equipped with statistics department which has become a vital research instrument worldwide. Moreover, Physics and Mathematics deal with functional relationships whereas in the real world there are so many probabilistic relationships in the universe. In such situations department of Statistics place a vital role with advanced techniques. Though PhD program of the institute is in pipeline but currently it offers BS, MSc and MPhil/MS programs in related disciplines.
Department of Physics
Studying Physics at UOG offers you an access to excellent facilities and expert tuition. Our courses include up-to-the minute development and can be rated as of international standards. The objectives are that the course is contemporary in content; is attractive and accessible to the widest possible variety of students; sets Physics in a variety of contexts, illustrating connections with everyday life, people, places and cultures; rewards students for initiative and commitment and allows them to develop their own interests; fully supports and recognises the use of essential mathematical methods in Physics, helping students to understand them; proves helpful to teachers using extensively tried and tested resources and ongoing support; and makes Physics exciting and relevant.
Department of Zoology
Zoology as a subject is multi-disciplinary in nature, involving study of organisms, their genetic, morphological and physiological attributes in surrounding environment and their role in the conservation of environment. The prime focus of the Department of Zoology is to impart knowledge about major disciplines of Zoology and teach different methods of exploration, investigation, organisation of data and its utilisation in practical life. It seeks to develop the scientific culture and professional skills in the students to serve in different professions in national and international organisations.
Department of Mathematics
The department of Mathematics, which is under the Faculty of Natural Sciences, is one of the oldest departments of the University of Gujrat. The University of Gujrat is newly established University and Department of Mathematics was established in 2004, when the academic programme was formulated and classes started and has produced many brilliant graduates. For two years teaching in this department was conducting on inter-Collegiate basis whereby teachers from local colleges like, Marghzar Colony College, F. J. College, Science College GT Road, Gujrat used to come and take the M. Sc. Classes in the Government Zamindar College. In 2007, University of Gujrat took the important step of shifting this department in the university premises.
The department has the honour of having some eminent scholars on its faculty. The research production of mathematics has been going to its way to progress. The department currently has 16 members on its academic staff.
Despite its limited faculty and resources, the department has established close collaboration with several national institutions. Most of the collaborative research work is done on the basis of individual efforts of the faculty members of the department. Presently department conducts
- BS(Hons) 4 year,
- MSc 2 year, MPhil (Evening) Programmes.
Main objective
The main objective of the department of mathematics is to provide much-needed human resources in the vital fields of mathematics as well as physics. In order to provide the potential in MPhil students with a broad base of mathematics that will enable them to conduct worthwhile research in some mainstream area like Differential Equations, Mathematical Physics , Engineering Mathematics and Optimization Theory and Inflationary Cosmology , Topology and Metric space .
