The obvious strength and growing importance of Mass Communication and mass media need higher studies and scientific research to look into the issues with depth and draw some solid conclusions for the benefit of society. In this era of rapid development in information technology, everyone is concerned with the negative/ positive effects of the information revolution and changing horizons of the mass media. 

It is beyond any doubt that it is the leading department with all the most modern facilities and equipments. Being the pioneer in the field of Mass Communication in a less developed district like Gujrat and newly born University, it is compatible to any of the leading Mass Communication institute in big cities. Most of the training institutions in Mass Communication and Media are situated in big cities. Young people, who lived in smaller towns and were interested in pursuing a career in this field, long needed a good institution close to their home to join. The Department of Mass Communication and Media at UOG is distinctively interdisciplinary and international in its outlook, providing an innovative and exciting learning environment to ambitious students. It is, particularly ideal for female students, who do not want to live in big cities far away from their homes.

The academic programmes offered by the Centre for Media and Communication Studies and Media include practical applications in electronic, print and web publishing.  The Centre also has an FM radio station 106.6 and computer labs with internet facility. A TV station is also in the future planning of the Centre.

The students work with the rural and urban communities around the University and involve these communities in their programmes. The course inculcates among the students democratic values, professionalism and a yearning to serve people. In addition to more traditional learning and teaching, including lectures and small group tutorials, the students also participate in practical sessions and workshops besides online learning. A variety of forms of assessment appropriate for different subjects are used across the programme. These include exams, media practice, seminar contribution, group project and presentations, online contribution, web designing, and critical film reviews.

The focus of Centre is on higher standards in the field of education, including extensive media research. The Centre has started regular Ph. D program with full-fledge course work and is also offering M. Phil programs in both Research and Professional tracks. The Centre also offers 4-years BS and 2-year Masters Programs in mass communication.

Future Prospects

Career prospects of the students graduating from the Centre are outstanding. In a time of rapid technological changes, media practitioners and researchers need to be flexible in their approach and career objectives. In this respect, our graduates will be equipped with identifiable and excellent transferable communication skills, essential for a very wide range of careers. Many of these are actually assessed as part of the programme, and include argument, persuasion, writing for different audiences, time management, and confidence in public speaking, information technology and new media.
