Another major research project under consideration is Socio-demographic Mapping of Punjab. This survey will be designed with a vision to establish benchmark indicators on socioeconomic and demographic conditions of the people of Punjab at district and provincial levels. Survey findings will be helpful in identifying information about the pace of demographic transition vis-a-vis the developmental momentum in the stratified districts of Punjab. The Centre, by conducting various surveys, will develop a substantive database which will be used by faculty, staff and students for further analysis, preparation of theses and dissertations, classroom instruction, and for planning of programs or development of policies. Although the database will serve the entire campus, it will be most useful for those in social sciences such as population sciences, economics, sociology, psychology, as well as medicine, public health, education and information science, and public policy. Faculty of Social Sciences

Social sciences today have spread into more and more specialized disciplines, which deal with different aspects of social life of the people in a society. The compartmentalization of social sciences into various disciplines does not, however, negate the fundamental characteristics that it deals with social facts in whatever context we may study them. What makes the modern social sciences different is the method of discovering facts and figures. In spite of practical difficulties faced by social scientists in maintaining objectivity in the collection of facts, the coherence of social phenomenon and the profound unity of social sciences have never been seriously doubted.

Developing nations such as Pakistan are making their utmost effort to modernize themselves in order to achieve dynamic social institutions that are capable of solving their complex and diversified problems. Development, therefore, both economic and social, has become a keyword in the community of developing nations in the present era. It is not only a process of change, but it also signifies the plans and policies of government as well as other business and commercial institutions to find ways and means for satisfying the rising expectations of the people.

In Pakistan, there is a dire need of diverting the efforts of development on scientific lines, which means a concrete and deliberate emphasis on rational process of working in human organizations and manipulation of resources towards the attainment of desirable goals. The Faculty of Social Sciences at UOG has designed its academic programs keeping in view this need. UOG has planned close liaison and linkages with public and private sector organizations in order to facilitate the transition of the students from theory to practice for facing the real life problems in a dynamic working environment with courage, conviction and confidence.

Nawaz Sharif Medical College

The University of Gujrat, the Rachna College of Engineering and Technology, Gujranwala, and the Gujranwala Campus of University of the Punjab are fulfilling the needs of local population in terms of Social Sciences, Basic Sciences, Computer Sciences, Commerce and Engineering education. However, medical education, though in high demand, is not available in these institutions. Realising the inadequate facilities of medical education and quality health services, the Government of the Punjab took a historic step to revolutionise the health care facilities in Gujrat by establishing the Nawaz Sharif Medical College (NSMC) at the University of Gujrat in September 2008.

The following objectives have been set for the NSMC:

  • It will establish a system of medical counselling in wards as well as out patients departments where doctors assisted by clinical psychologists and social workers will address the relatives of the patients about nature of the disease and its prognosis.

  • There will be regular interaction with the public at least twice a week on hygienic living conditions.

  • The doctors and paramedical staff will be trained by and under the direct supervision of highly qualified faculty members through utilising state-of the-art medical equipments and most recently adopted teaching methodologies.

  • To develop a system of interaction with colleges, schools and mosques to bring public awareness about prevention of diseases.

  • To establish research-oriented atmosphere among the doctors not only in modern medical field but also in indigenous medicine.

  • A mandatory system of medical, surgical and administrative audit will be established for ensuring accountability and responsibility on the part of employees, especially medical teachers.

  • By induction of highly qualified medical professionals and modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipments, not only the public of District Gujrat, but also adjoining areas of Gujranwala, Sialkot, Wazirabad, Jhelum, Kharian and Mandi Bahauddin will be facilitated.

  • The introduction of CT scan, MRI facilities, Cardiac Angiography, Cardiac Surgery, etc will provide state-of the-art health care facilities to the public of the area.

  • The College will develop a Health Management Information System and computer networking in the institution. In future, the College will become an institution for post-graduate studies.

  • In near future, College of Dentistry, College of Nursing, School of Physiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine Centre will be set up in Gujrat.

  • The trend to attend the teaching hospital attached to the College will increase after the provision of new medical facilities. Therefore, there is also a need to expand the existing infrastructure of the hospital and equip it with modern medical equipments to facilitate the learners as well as patients of the local area.

  • Finally, the University of Gujrat plans to establish a Research and Development Centre to address the emerging issues through various socio-medical studies by engaging the medical and social sciences faculty/students both from the NSMC and UOG.

Faculty of Oriental languages and Islamic Studies

The Faculty of Oriental Languages and Islamic Learning currently comprises only the Department of English. However, departments of many other languages – French, Punjabi, Urdu, etc – will be established in the near future, and academic programmes from BS (Hons) to MPhil level will be offered in them. Moreover, the proposed departments of Islamic Studies and Pakistan Studies, which are currently being offered as compulsory courses by all departments of the University at the BS (Hons) level, will become a part of the faculty after introduction of full-fledged academic programmes in the two subjects. It is important to emphasise that the proposed Department of Islamic Studies will be a unique initiative; it will aim at introducing the true face of Islam, opposed to violence in all its manifestations. The University’s Chancellor, Punjab Governor Mr Salman Taseer, has already approved the plan to establish a Sufi Chair under the proposed Department.
